Vienna, Austria
Two Baroque palaces facing each other across terraced gardens, home to Gustav Klimt’s painting The Kiss.
The Belvedere was built in the early eighteenth century as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy: an Upper and a Lower Palace linked by terraced gardens with fountains and statues. Today it is one of Vienna’s finest art museums.
The Upper Belvedere holds the world’s largest collection of paintings by Gustav Klimt, including the golden The Kiss, alongside works by Egon Schiele and other Austrian artists. Even if art is not your passion, the marble hall and the view from the top of the gardens back towards the city centre are worth the visit.
Combine it with a ride on the Ringstrasse tram past the Opera, Parliament and City Hall. The Upper Belvedere is the part to prioritise if time is short.
