Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Completed in 2007, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the centrepiece of most Abu Dhabi day trips. Its courtyard of white marble is inlaid with flowering vines, more than 80 domes crown the roofline, and the main prayer hall holds crystal chandeliers and one of the largest hand-knotted carpets in the world.

Visitors of all faiths are welcome outside prayer times. A dress code applies: loose clothing covering arms and legs for everyone, and a headscarf for women. Shoes come off before the prayer hall.

The mosque is closed to tourists on Friday mornings. Come in the late afternoon to see the marble turn gold at sunset and the domes light up, then combine it with the BAPS Hindu Mandir or a drive along the Corniche.
