Uluwatu Temple and Kecak Dance

Pura Luhur Uluwatu sits at the very edge of a sheer limestone cliff on the Bukit Peninsula, with the Indian Ocean pounding the rocks far below. The paths along the clifftop give some of the finest coastal views in Bali, especially as the sun drops towards the horizon.

Each evening an open-air amphitheatre beside the temple hosts the Kecak dance, in which a circle of bare-chested men chant in rhythm while dancers act out episodes from the Ramayana, ending with Hanuman amid a ring of fire. For many Indian visitors, recognising Rama, Sita and Ravana in a Balinese setting is a highlight of the whole trip.

Sarongs are provided at the entrance. Keep sunglasses, hats and phones secure, as the temple’s monkeys are known for snatching them. Arrive at least an hour before sunset to walk the cliffs and get good seats for the dance.
