Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan stands on the shore of Lake Beratan, high in the mountains near Bedugul. Built in the seventeenth century, it is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake, whose waters feed the farmland below. When the lake is high, its tall multi-tiered shrines appear to float on the water.

The temple grounds are laid out as gardens, with flower beds, lawns and lakeside walks, and the mountains behind are often veiled in mist. The air up here is noticeably cooler than on the coast, a pleasant change on a warm day.

Combine it with the Bedugul market, known for its fruit and flowers, and the rice terraces of Jatiluwih on a full-day highland tour. Bring a light jacket, and arrive in the morning, before the clouds tend to build.
