Curving green rice terraces at Tegallalang lined with tall coconut palms on a hillside near Ubud

Ubud, Bali

Tegallalang Rice Terraces

Steep emerald rice terraces fringed with coconut palms just north of Ubud, with paths down into the valley and cafés along the rim.

Nature & scenery

About Tegallalang Rice Terraces

The rice terraces at Tegallalang fall in curving green steps down both sides of a valley north of Ubud, shaded by tall coconut palms. They are watered by subak, the cooperative irrigation system Balinese farmers have used for centuries to channel water from springs and temples down through every field.

You can take in the view from the cafés along the road, or follow the paths down into the terraces and up the far side. Swings and photo platforms have sprung up along the slopes for those who want them.

Come early in the morning, before the tour coaches arrive and while the light is soft. Wear shoes with good grip, as the paths can be steep and muddy after rain. Combine it with a coffee plantation or the Tirta Empul water temple on the way back to Ubud.
