What to expect

A honeymoon in two halves: three nights among the rice fields and temples around Ubud, then two nights by the sea in the south. You watch the sun go down twice over the Indian Ocean, once from the sea temple of Tanah Lot and once from the clifftop at Uluwatu with the Kecak fire dance, and spend a day on the dramatic cliffs and beaches of Nusa Penida.

Sightseeing is by private car with a driver, so you set the pace and can linger wherever you like. We choose hotels with a private pool villa or a quiet room with a view, and can add a couples' spa, a sunrise trek up Mount Batur, an extra beach day or a few nights on the Gili Islands. Bali is mostly Hindu, so vegetarian food is easy to find, and there are Indian restaurants in Ubud, Seminyak and Nusa Dua.

1
Arrive in Bali, transfer to Ubud
Land at Denpasar and drive about an hour and a half to Ubud. The rest of the day is yours to settle into your villa.

Rice terraces, temples and Kintamani
Walk the Tegallalang rice terraces in the morning light, then visit the holy spring temple of Tirta Empul. Have lunch overlooking Mount Batur and its crater lake at Kintamani, with a stop at a coffee and spice plantation on the way back.

Ubud at leisure, sunset at Tanah Lot
A slow morning for a Balinese spa treatment, the Sacred Monkey Forest or the Ubud Art Market. In the afternoon, drive to Tanah Lot to watch the sun set behind the temple on its rock in the sea.

To the beach, Uluwatu and the Kecak dance
Move to your beach hotel in the south of the island. Late in the afternoon, visit the clifftop Uluwatu Temple, then watch the Kecak fire dance as the sun sets, followed by a candlelit dinner on Jimbaran beach.

Day trip to Nusa Penida
Take a fast boat from Sanur, about 45 minutes, to Nusa Penida. See the Kelingking Beach cliffs, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong; the roads are bumpy, so it is a full and active day.

Depart from Bali
A last morning by the pool before your transfer to the airport.
