Baku, Azerbaijan
A seaside park running for kilometres along the Caspian, with promenades, fountains, the Carpet Museum, the canals of Little Venice and the Baku Eye.
Baku Boulevard, officially the National Seaside Park, follows the curve of the bay for several kilometres and is where the city comes to stroll in the evening. Shaded paths, fountains and cafés run beside the water, with the Flame Towers and the TV tower on the hills behind.
Along the way are the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, a building shaped like a rolled-up carpet, the small canals and gondolas of Little Venice, and the Baku Eye Ferris wheel. Short boat trips around the bay leave from the piers in good weather.
Come in the early evening, when the heat has eased and families are out. It pairs easily with the Old City across the road. Bring a light jacket, as Baku is a famously windy city.
