Central Asia & Caucasus

Azerbaijan

Fire, stone and the Caspian shore

Overview

Why visit Azerbaijan?

Azerbaijan packs a lot into a short trip. Baku, its capital on the Caspian Sea, pairs a walled medieval Old City with glass towers that glow like flames at night, and a short drive out of town brings you to prehistoric rock carvings, bubbling mud volcanoes and a hillside where natural gas has burned for as long as anyone remembers.

Most travellers spend three or four nights in Baku and add a night or two in the Caucasus foothills at Gabala, where cable cars climb into forested mountains, or in Sheki, an old silk-road town with a painted palace. Roads are good, distances are manageable and the pace can be as gentle as you like.

Azerbaijan suits families, couples and groups of friends looking for somewhere new that is quick to reach from India. We point you to vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Baku, where Indian food is easy to find, and can combine Azerbaijan with Georgia for a week in the Caucasus.

Planning a trip to Azerbaijan

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Azerbaijan?

Yes. Indian travellers apply for an electronic visa online before departure, and it usually comes through within a few working days. We check the current rules and help with the application when we confirm your trip.

Is vegetarian food easy to find in Baku?

Azerbaijani cooking leans on lamb, but there is plenty to eat: herb-filled qutab flatbreads, vegetable dishes, fresh salads, bread and fruit. Baku also has several Indian restaurants, and we note vegetarian options on your itinerary.

How many days do we need for Azerbaijan?

Five or six days covers Baku, a day trip to Gobustan and a night in Gabala. With a week or more you can add Sheki or cross into neighbouring Georgia.

Can we use cards, or should we carry cash?

Cards are widely accepted in Baku’s hotels, malls and restaurants. Carry some Azerbaijani manat in cash for markets, small cafés and the regions.
