The carved wooden spires of the Sanctuary of Truth rising above tropical gardens in Pattaya on an overcast day

Pattaya, Thailand

Sanctuary of Truth

A vast hand-carved wooden temple on the Pattaya seafront, covered in figures from Hindu and Buddhist belief and still being carved today.

About Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth is a towering temple-like hall built entirely of wood, standing on the shore at the northern end of Pattaya. Work began in the early 1980s and carving continues today, so you can watch craftsmen shaping new pieces in the workshops beside it.

Almost every surface is covered with gods, celestial dancers, animals and scenes from Hindu and Buddhist traditions, many of which Indian visitors will recognise. Guided tours explain the symbolism of each wing and the craftsmanship behind it.

Visit in the morning or late afternoon, when the light on the carvings is softer, with shoulders and knees covered. It pairs well with a relaxed afternoon on the beach or a visit to Nong Nooch Tropical Garden.
