Chuncheon, near Seoul, South Korea
A tree-lined river island east of Seoul, made famous by the drama Winter Sonata, with tall avenues of metasequoia and ginkgo.
Nami Island is a half-moon-shaped island in the Bukhan River, about one and a half hours from Seoul. Its long avenues of metasequoia, ginkgo and pine became famous across Asia after appearing in the K-drama Winter Sonata, and the island has been a favourite outing ever since.
Arrive by ferry, or by zip wire for the adventurous, then walk or cycle along the tree-lined paths past small galleries and cafés. Each season brings different colours: blossom in spring, deep green in summer, gold and red in autumn and snow in winter.
Combine it with the Garden of Morning Calm or the rail bikes at Gangchon for a full day out of the city. Day tours from Seoul include transport and the ferry crossing.
