Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town’s flat-topped mountain, reached by a rotating cable car, with views over the city, Robben Island and two coastlines.
Table Mountain rises more than a kilometre above Cape Town, its flat summit stretching for about three kilometres. It is part of Table Mountain National Park and of the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of plants found nowhere else on earth.
The Aerial Cableway carries you to the top in a few minutes, its cars slowly rotating so everyone gets the full view. At the top, easy paths lead to viewpoints over the city, Lion’s Head, the Atlantic beaches and Robben Island, and there is a café for a warm drink.
The cableway closes in strong wind or when the “tablecloth” of cloud rolls over the summit, so we keep your Cape Town days flexible and go up on the first clear morning. Bring a jacket; it is much cooler on top.
