Uros Floating Islands

Lake Titicaca, on the border of Peru and Bolivia, lies at about 3,800 metres. Near the port of Puno, the Uros people live on dozens of floating islands that they build and constantly renew from layers of totora reeds growing in the shallows.

A short boat trip from Puno takes you to the islands, where families explain how the reeds are cut and layered, show you their homes and crafts, and offer rides in reed boats with carved prows. Many tours continue to Taquile Island, known for its fine hand-woven textiles.

Puno is reached by a short flight from Cusco to Juliaca or by a full-day scenic train or road journey across the high plains. The lake is high and cold, so pack warm clothes and strong sun protection.
