Ica, Peru
A palm-fringed lagoon ringed by giant sand dunes, where dune-buggy rides and sandboarding end with sunset over the desert.
On the edge of Ica, about four to five hours' drive south of Lima, the tiny village of Huacachina wraps around a natural lagoon surrounded by huge sand dunes. With its palm trees and still water, it looks like a desert scene from a film.
The classic activity is an afternoon dune-buggy ride, racing over the sand with stops to try sandboarding, either standing or lying on the board. Rides end on a high dune to watch the sunset. Paddle boats on the lagoon are a gentler option for senior travellers.
Combine Huacachina with a boat trip to the Ballestas Islands from Paracas, home to sea lions and Humboldt penguins, and a flight over the Nazca Lines. Buggy rides are bumpy and not suitable for anyone with back problems.
