The stone terraces and buildings of Machu Picchu beneath the steep green peak of Huayna Picchu

Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu

The 15th-century Inca citadel on a ridge high above the Urubamba River, reached by scenic train and bus from Cusco.

Culture & heritage

About Machu Picchu

Built in the 15th century and abandoned within about a hundred years, Machu Picchu remained largely unknown to the outside world until 1911. Its temples, terraces and stone houses sit at about 2,430 metres on a ridge between two peaks, with Huayna Picchu rising behind. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders.

Scenic trains run from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, where buses climb the switchback road to the entrance. Entry is by timed ticket on set circuits with a licensed guide, and daily numbers are limited, so we book months ahead.

Stay overnight in Aguas Calientes for an early entry before the day visitors arrive. Carry your passport, which is checked at the gate, and a light rain jacket, as mist and showers can roll in at any time.
