Looking down into Cenote Ik Kil, a round sinkhole with hanging vines and blue water surrounded by green foliage

Near Chichén Itzá, Mexico

Cenote Ik Kil

Swim in a deep, round sinkhole draped with hanging vines and roots, a refreshing stop on the way back from Chichén Itzá.

Nature & scenery

About Cenote Ik Kil

Cenotes are natural sinkholes in the Yucatán's limestone, filled with clear groundwater, and the ancient Maya regarded them as sacred gateways to the underworld. Ik Kil is one of the most photogenic: an open, circular well with sheer walls, lush ferns and long vines trailing down to the water.

Stone steps lead down to a platform where you can swim. Life jackets are available, and you are asked to shower first to keep the water clean. The water is cool and deep, so non-swimmers should stay close to the edge and keep their jackets on.

Ik Kil is just a few minutes' drive from Chichén Itzá, so most tours combine the two. Midday brings the tour buses; late afternoon is quieter. Lockers and changing rooms are on site.
