Kakheti, Georgia
A walled hilltop town above the Alazani Valley, at the heart of the region where Georgians have made wine in buried clay jars for millennia.
Sighnaghi, about two hours east of Tbilisi, is a small town of cobbled streets and red roofs inside 18th-century walls, looking across the Alazani Valley to the Caucasus. It is the natural base for Kakheti, Georgia’s main wine region.
Georgians have made wine in qvevri, large clay vessels buried in the ground, for thousands of years, a tradition recognised by UNESCO. Family wineries welcome visitors for tastings, and there is plenty for those who do not drink: bread baked in a round tone oven, churchkhela-making, and long lunches of fresh cheese, herbs and vegetables. Bodbe Monastery, just outside town, is a peaceful stop.
Walk a stretch of the town walls for the best views, ideally late in the day. A night in Sighnaghi is worth it if your schedule allows.
