Stepantsminda, Georgia
A 14th-century stone church on a high ridge beneath Mount Kazbek, reached by a scenic drive along the Georgian Military Road.
Gergeti Trinity Church stands alone on a grassy ridge above the village of Stepantsminda, with the glacier-capped cone of Mount Kazbek behind it. Built in the 14th century, it is the picture most people have in mind when they think of Georgia.
The day trip from Tbilisi is as memorable as the church itself. The Georgian Military Road climbs past Ananuri Fortress and the slopes of Gudauri, crosses the Jvari Pass and drops into the Kazbegi valley. From the village, 4x4 vehicles take you up to the church, or keen walkers can hike up in about an hour and a half.
It is cool and windy at the top even in summer, so carry a jacket. Women are asked to cover their heads and wear a skirt inside; wraps are usually available at the door. Set off early to reach the church before cloud gathers around Kazbek.
