Gudauri, Georgia
Georgia’s main ski resort high on the Georgian Military Road, with snow from December to March and tandem paragliding over the valleys.
Gudauri sits at around 2,200 metres on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus, about two hours from Tbilisi. In winter it is Georgia’s busiest ski resort, with wide open runs above the tree line, ski schools for beginners and gondolas that non-skiers can ride for the views.
Tandem paragliding is the other big draw: an experienced pilot takes you off the slopes for a flight over snowfields or summer meadows, with no experience needed. Just beyond the resort, the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, a curved viewing platform decorated with a colourful mosaic, looks out over the deep valley below.
For many Indian families, Gudauri is where children see real snow for the first time. Warm clothing and boots can be hired locally, and plans should stay flexible, as wind sometimes grounds the paragliders.
