Trevi Fountain

Tucked into a small square, the Trevi Fountain fills the whole side of a palace: Neptune in his shell-shaped chariot, tritons taming sea horses, and water pouring over carved rocks into a turquoise basin. It was completed in 1762 and is fed by an aqueduct first built in ancient Rome.

Tradition says that if you throw a coin over your left shoulder with your right hand, you will return to Rome. The coins are collected and given to charity.

The square is crowded from mid-morning until late at night, so come early in the morning for photographs. It is a short walk from the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps, and the lanes around it are full of gelato shops. Sitting on the rim or paddling in the water is not allowed.
