What to expect

Italy from top to toe in nine days, travelling between cities on high-speed trains. You begin with Milan's cathedral and a day on Lake Como, see Renaissance Florence and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, walk through ancient Rome and the Vatican, and finish in the south with a boat to Capri and the cliff road along the Amalfi Coast.

It is a full itinerary that suits first-time visitors, families with older children and groups of friends. If you prefer a gentler pace, we can add a night in Florence or Rome, include Venice, or stay longer by the sea. Pasta, pizza and risotto make vegetarian eating straightforward, and we can suggest Indian restaurants in each city.

A suggested plan. Days can be added, dropped or swapped around your dates and interests.

1
Arrive in Milan
Land in Milan and transfer to your hotel. In the afternoon, see the Duomo and walk through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
Day
2
Day trip to Lake Como
Take the train to the lake, about an hour from Milan, and cross by boat to Bellagio with its lanes, gardens and lakeside villas. Return to Milan in the evening.

Milan to Florence
A high-speed train brings you to Florence in about two hours. Walk past the Duomo and its dome, Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio, and watch the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo.

Pisa and an afternoon in Florence
Take the train to Pisa, about an hour away, to see the Leaning Tower and the cathedral in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Back in Florence, the afternoon is free for the Uffizi or for Michelangelo's David at the Accademia.

Florence to Rome, the Colosseum
Reach Rome by high-speed train in about an hour and a half. In the afternoon, take a guided tour of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, then toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain and see the Pantheon.

The Vatican, then south to Sorrento
Visit the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica in the morning. After lunch, take the train to Naples and continue by road to Sorrento, your base for the coast.

Day trip to Capri
Cross to Capri by ferry and take a boat around the island's cliffs and sea caves, with the Blue Grotto when the sea allows. Ride the funicular up to the Piazzetta before the ferry back.

Amalfi Coast drive
Follow the cliff road to Positano and the town of Amalfi, stopping at viewpoints along the way. Spend time on the beach and in the lanes before returning to Sorrento.

Depart from Naples or Rome
Transfer to Naples Airport, about an hour and a half away, or take the train to Rome for your flight home.
