About Copacabana Beach

Copacabana curves for about four kilometres between two rocky headlands, backed by apartment blocks and hotels along Avenida Atlântica. The black-and-white wave mosaic of its promenade, laid out by the landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, is recognised around the world.

Beach life here is a show in itself: football and volleyball games, vendors selling fresh coconut water, and kiosks all along the promenade. Next door, Ipanema and Leblon are a little more relaxed, and the rock at Arpoador is the favourite spot to watch the sunset. On New Year's Eve, crowds of well over a million gather here for fireworks over the sea.

The Atlantic surf can be strong, so swim only where others are swimming and lifeguards are present. Take only what you need onto the sand.
