About Amazon Rainforest from Manaus

Manaus, a city in the middle of the rainforest, is the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon. Just outside it is the Meeting of the Waters, where the dark Rio Negro and the sandy-brown Solimões flow side by side for several kilometres before mixing to form the Amazon.

The best way to experience the forest is two or three nights at a jungle lodge, with guided canoe trips through flooded forest, walks to learn about medicinal plants, visits to riverside communities and the chance of spotting pink river dolphins. In the city, the domed Teatro Amazonas opera house recalls the riches of the rubber boom.

Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for the region. Lodges are comfortable but simple, so we confirm vegetarian meals in advance; pack long sleeves, light rain gear and insect repellent.
