El Calafate, Argentina
Watch towers of blue ice crash into Lago Argentino from the glacier's balconies, or trek on its surface with crampons.
In Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Perito Moreno Glacier ends in a wall of ice about five kilometres wide, rising some 70 metres above the water of Lago Argentino. Unlike most glaciers, it has stayed relatively stable, and great slabs regularly break away with a roar.
A network of walkways and balconies faces the ice at different levels and is easy for all ages. Boat trips sail close to the ice front, and a guided mini-trek with crampons on the glacier's surface is unforgettable for those who meet the age and fitness limits.
The glacier is about an hour and a half by road from El Calafate. Bring warm, windproof layers and sunglasses, and spend at least two or three hours on the walkways watching for ice to fall.
