Water thundering over the edge of the Devil's Throat at Iguazú, with clouds of spray rising from the chasm

Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Iguazú Falls and the Devil's Throat

Walk the catwalks of Argentina's Iguazú National Park to stand above the Devil's Throat, where the river plunges into a vast chasm.

Nature & scenery

About Iguazú Falls and the Devil's Throat

Around 80 per cent of the Iguazú Falls lie on the Argentine side, so here you walk among them rather than looking across. Iguazú National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has two main trails: the Upper Circuit along the top of the falls and the Lower Circuit, which brings you close to their base.

The highlight is the Devil's Throat, a U-shaped chasm where the water thunders down on three sides. A small forest train carries you to the start of a catwalk of about a kilometre that ends right at its edge. For a soaking, a speedboat ride takes you under the falls themselves.

Allow a full day and wear quick-dry clothes. Coatis roam the trails; keep food out of sight, as they can snatch bags and bite.
