White sand and pale turquoise water at Nungwi Beach, with a thatched wooden pier restaurant on stilts

North Zanzibar, Tanzania

Nungwi Beach Zanzibar

Zanzibar’s northern tip, with white sand, turquoise water that stays swimmable at low tide, traditional dhows and golden sunsets.

Beach & island

About Nungwi Beach Zanzibar

Nungwi, at the northern tip of Zanzibar, is one of the island’s most popular beach areas. Unlike much of the east coast, where the sea retreats a long way at low tide, the water here stays swimmable through most of the day, and the beach faces west for long, golden sunsets.

Spend your days swimming and relaxing, snorkel or dive around Mnemba Atoll, visit the turtle sanctuary at Mnarani, or watch dhows being built by hand on the sand as they have been for generations. A sunset dhow cruise is a lovely way to end the day.

Nungwi is about an hour’s drive from Stone Town and has a lively choice of restaurants and resorts; for a quieter stay, we suggest hotels on nearby Kendwa beach or the east coast.
