A primeval palm forest on Praslin and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home of the giant coco de mer nut and the rare black parrot.
The Vallée de Mai is a rare surviving palm forest that has changed little since prehistoric times, and it was listed by UNESCO in 1983. Its stars are the coco de mer palms, which produce the largest seed in the plant kingdom, a double coconut that can weigh more than 20 kilograms.
Well-marked trails, from half an hour to a few hours long, lead beneath fan-shaped leaves several metres across. Listen for the whistle of the Seychelles black parrot, found only on Praslin, and look out for bright green geckos on the palm trunks.
The forest is cool and shady, which makes it a good choice for the middle of the day. Wear comfortable shoes and keep to the paths; a guide brings the forest’s strange stories to life.
