Mahé, Seychelles
A sheltered bay on Mahé’s west coast, protected as a marine park, with calm, clear water for snorkelling over coral.
Port Launay, on the north-west coast of Mahé, is a deep, quiet bay of clear water backed by forested hills, and its reefs are protected as a marine national park. The beach at the head of the bay is one of the prettiest on the island and rarely crowded.
Snorkelling from the shore or a boat reveals coral, reef fish and sometimes turtles. Boat trips often combine the park with neighbouring Baie Ternay, and a drive here can take in the Morne Seychellois mountains and the old tea factory on the way.
The water is calmest in the morning. Bring reef shoes and leave everything as you find it: fishing and collecting shells are not allowed in the park. Sunscreen and a hat are essential, as the bay is in full sun from late morning.
