Masai Mara, Kenya
A dawn balloon flight drifting low over the Mara’s plains and herds, followed by a cooked breakfast out in the bush.
There is no quieter way to see the Masai Mara than from a hot-air balloon. Flights take off around sunrise, and for about an hour you drift over the grassland with the wind, sometimes high enough to follow the curve of the river, sometimes low enough to watch elephants, giraffes and wildebeest below.
After landing, the crew lays out a cooked breakfast in the bush, and a game drive brings you back to camp by mid-morning. It is a special treat for honeymooners and milestone birthdays, and the photographs from the basket are among the best of any safari.
Pick-ups are very early and flights depend on the weather. There is a minimum age for children, which we confirm with the operator. Wear layers, as dawn on the plains is cold.
