Almaty, Kazakhstan
A colourful wooden Russian Orthodox cathedral in leafy Panfilov Park, built in the early 1900s and still standing after the earthquake of 1911.
The Ascension Cathedral, often called Zenkov Cathedral after its architect, stands in the middle of Panfilov Park in central Almaty. Completed in the early 20th century, it is built largely of wood, painted in pastel colours and crowned with gilded domes.
It survived the earthquake of 1911 that destroyed much of the town, and today it is once again a working church, its interior bright with icons. Around it, Panfilov Park has shady avenues, a war memorial with an eternal flame and plenty of benches for a break.
Visitors are welcome outside service times; women should cover their heads and wear a skirt or long dress. The Green Bazaar, Almaty’s main market for dried fruit, nuts and spices, is a short walk away.
