Shibuya Crossing

When the traffic lights turn red at Shibuya Crossing, every pedestrian signal turns green at once, and crowds pour across the junction from all sides in a choreographed rush. It is one of the defining sights of modern Tokyo, especially after dark when the neon and screens are lit.

Cross it yourself, then watch from above: the Shibuya Sky rooftop deck, the station’s upper floors and several cafés overlook the junction. Nearby stands the statue of Hachiko, the loyal dog who waited at Shibuya station for his owner for years after the man’s death.

The crossing is busiest on weekend evenings. Shibuya and neighbouring Harajuku are also excellent for shopping, from department stores to quirky youth fashion. Shibuya station is served by several train and metro lines, making it easy to reach from anywhere in Tokyo.
