Senso-ji Temple

Founded in the 7th century, Senso-ji is Tokyo’s oldest and most visited temple, dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Visitors pass beneath the huge red lantern of the Kaminarimon, or Thunder Gate, and walk up Nakamise-dori, a lane of stalls selling rice crackers, sweet bean cakes, fans and souvenirs.

Beyond the second gate, the Hozomon, stand the main hall and a five-storey pagoda. Join the locals wafting incense smoke over themselves for good health, or draw an omikuji fortune slip. Look out for the giant straw sandals hanging on the Hozomon gate, said to ward off evil.

Come early in the morning for a calm visit, or after dark, when the buildings are lit and the crowds have gone. Combine Asakusa with a Sumida River cruise or the Tokyo Skytree nearby.
