Ephesus Ancient City

Ephesus was a great port city of the Greek and Roman world, and its marble streets, temples and houses survive on a scale few ancient sites can match. The two-storey facade of the Library of Celsus is the star, along with the Great Theatre, Curetes Street and the richly decorated Terrace Houses. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A guided walk runs downhill from the upper gate to the library and theatre, so there is little climbing. Nearby you can visit the House of the Virgin Mary and the town of Selçuk.

There is very little shade and the marble reflects the heat, so in summer go at opening time and bring hats, sunscreen and water. Comfortable shoes help on the polished stone.
