Sintra, Portugal
The westernmost point of mainland Europe, where a lighthouse and a stone monument stand on cliffs above the Atlantic.
Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of mainland Europe, a windswept headland of cliffs about 140 metres above the Atlantic. A stone monument quotes the poet Luís de Camões: 'Where the land ends and the sea begins'.
Walk the clifftop paths for the views, see the red-topped lighthouse, and pick up a certificate at the visitor office to show you have stood at Europe's western edge. The cape lies within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, and in spring the clifftops are covered in wild flowers.
The cape is about 20 minutes by road from Sintra and is usually combined with Sintra and the seaside town of Cascais on a day trip from Lisbon. It is often windy, so bring a jacket, and keep to the marked paths, well back from the unfenced cliff edges.
