Brussels, Belgium
Brussels' gilded central square, ringed by guildhouses and the Gothic Town Hall, with the Manneken Pis a short walk away.
The Grand-Place is the heart of Brussels: a cobbled square enclosed by the Gothic Town Hall, with its 96-metre tower, and ornate gilded guildhouses rebuilt after a French bombardment in 1695. It is listed by UNESCO and is magical at night, when the façades are floodlit.
Every two years in August, in even-numbered years, the square is covered with a vast carpet of begonias. All year round the surrounding lanes are full of chocolatiers, lace shops and waffle stands, and the Manneken Pis statue is a few minutes away on foot.
Visit once by day and again after dark. Central Brussels is compact, so the Grand-Place, the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert and the Mont des Arts fit easily into one walk.
