Bruges, Belgium
A medieval city of canals and gabled houses, seen from a canal boat, with the Belfry towering over the Markt square.
Bruges was one of the richest trading cities of medieval Europe, and its centre has survived almost intact: a UNESCO-listed web of canals, cobbled streets and step-gabled houses. The Markt, its main square, is overlooked by the Belfry, whose carillon rings out across the rooftops.
A half-hour canal boat ride is the best introduction, gliding under low bridges past the Rozenhoedkaai and quiet gardens. On foot, visit the Beguinage beside the Minnewater lake, where swans glide, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood.
Bruges is about an hour from Brussels by train. Day visitors fill the centre from late morning, so an overnight stay lets you enjoy the lanes in the evening calm. Shops here sell lace and some of the finest chocolate in Belgium.
