Giza, Egypt
The Great Pyramid, its two companions and the Sphinx on the desert edge of Cairo, the last survivor of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The three pyramids of Giza were built about 4,500 years ago as tombs for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing, and seeing it in person, block by enormous block, is unforgettable.
A typical visit includes a walk around the Great Pyramid, the panoramic viewpoint where all three line up for photographs, and the Great Sphinx guarding the causeway below. You can also go inside one of the pyramids through a narrow, steep passage, or take a short camel ride across the sand.
Arrive at opening time to beat the heat and the crowds, wear a hat and comfortable shoes, and arrange any camel or horse ride through your guide. The evening sound and light show brings the site to life after dark.
