Thimphu, Bhutan
Thimphu’s grand riverside fortress, seat of Bhutan’s government and its central monastic body, with an evening flag ceremony.
Tashichho Dzong stands on the west bank of the Wang Chhu river on the northern edge of Thimphu. Rebuilt in traditional style in the 1960s, it houses the throne room and offices of the King, several government ministries and the summer quarters of the central monastic body.
Its massive whitewashed walls, golden roofs and painted courtyards are a superb example of Bhutanese architecture. Visitors can enter the main courtyard and temples, and in the late afternoon watch the ceremonial lowering of the national flag outside. Each autumn, the Thimphu Tshechu festival of masked dances is held beside it.
Because the dzong is a working government building, visiting hours are limited around official business, and we time your visit accordingly. Dress formally, with long sleeves and long trousers or skirts, and remove hats inside.
