Phillip Island Penguin Parade

Every evening at sunset, little penguins, the smallest penguin species in the world, come ashore on Summerland Beach and waddle up to their burrows in the dunes. Phillip Island Nature Parks runs the viewing from stands and raised boardwalks, so you watch them pass within a few metres.

The island is about two hours by road from Melbourne. Afternoon tours usually add the Koala Conservation Reserve and the clifftop boardwalks at the Nobbies, which look out towards Seal Rocks and the open ocean.

Photography is not allowed during the parade, to protect the birds, so simply enjoy the moment. The beach is cold and windy after dark even in summer, so bring warm layers, and expect to return to Melbourne late in the evening.
