Cairns and the Whitsundays, Australia
Snorkel, ride a glass-bottom boat or take a scenic flight over the world's largest coral reef system, reached from Cairns or the Whitsundays.
Stretching for more than 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system on earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most visitors reach it on a day cruise from Cairns or Port Douglas, or from the Whitsunday Islands further south.
Outer-reef pontoons make it easy for non-swimmers: you can stay dry in a semi-submersible or glass-bottom boat, or snorkel in a flotation vest with a guide close by. Certified divers, and beginners on an introductory dive, can go deeper. A helicopter or seaplane flight over Heart Reef in the Whitsundays is a memorable add-on for honeymooners.
The crossing to the outer reef can be choppy, so take seasickness tablets before you board. Use reef-safe sunscreen, and let us request vegetarian lunches when we book.
