Rock fortresses, tea hills and wild southern coasts
Sri Lanka packs remarkable variety into a small island just off India’s southern tip. In the Cultural Triangle, the rock fortress of Sigiriya rises from the plains; in the hills, Kandy’s Temple of the Tooth and the tea estates of Nuwara Eliya lead on to a famously scenic train ride to Ella; and in the south, leopards roam Yala and the old fort at Galle looks out over the Indian Ocean.
For Indian travellers it is one of the closest international holidays, with short flights, a familiar climate and plenty of vegetarian food: rice and curry, dosas and string hoppers are everyday fare. Many visitors also follow the Ramayana trail, visiting places linked by tradition to Sita and Hanuman in the hill country and the south.
A week lets you see the highlights at a comfortable pace, travelling with a private car and driver-guide from Colombo through the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and the hills to the south coast. We tailor it for honeymooners with beach time at the end, or for families and senior travellers with shorter driving days.
