Doha, Qatar
A man-made island of marinas and pastel, Venetian-style canals, with waterfront cafés and boutiques for a relaxed evening.
The Pearl-Qatar is an artificial island off Doha’s northern shore, built over a former pearl-diving ground. Its Porto Arabia district rings a marina of superyachts with a promenade of cafés and shops, while Qanat Quartier is styled on Venice, with pastel houses, little bridges and canals. The island is linked to the mainland by road, a short taxi ride from West Bay.
It is a pleasant place for an unhurried evening: a walk along the waterfront, ice cream for the children, photographs on the colourful bridges and dinner by the water. There are plenty of vegetarian-friendly restaurants, including Indian ones.
Come in the late afternoon for soft light on Qanat Quartier, then stay as the marina lights come on. It combines easily with Katara Cultural Village, a short drive away.
