Casablanca, Morocco
One of the largest mosques in the world, built partly over the Atlantic, with a soaring minaret and guided tours open to visitors.
The Hassan II Mosque stands on a platform jutting into the Atlantic at Casablanca, and its minaret, at around 210 metres, is one of the tallest in the world. Completed in 1993, it was built by thousands of Moroccan craftsmen, and the scale and detail of their work are astonishing.
It is one of the few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims can enter, on guided tours outside prayer times. Inside, carved cedar ceilings, marble floors, mosaic tilework and a retractable roof surround a prayer hall that holds tens of thousands of worshippers.
Dress modestly, with arms and legs covered, and women may wish to bring a scarf. Tours pause during prayers, so we time your visit accordingly; most travellers see the mosque on arriving in or leaving from Casablanca.
