Beijing, China
The vast palace of the Ming and Qing emperors, a walled city of golden roofs, marble terraces and great halls in the heart of Beijing.
For almost five hundred years, from 1420 until the last emperor abdicated, the Forbidden City was the home of China’s emperors and the centre of their power. Today it is the Palace Museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a walled complex of courtyards, gates and halls with yellow-tiled roofs, the colour reserved for the emperor.
A walk from south to north passes the great ceremonial halls, including the Hall of Supreme Harmony, then the private living quarters, treasure galleries and the Imperial Garden. Afterwards, climb the hill in Jingshan Park for the classic view over the golden rooftops.
Entry is by timed, passport-linked ticket with a daily limit, so we reserve yours in advance. The museum is closed on Mondays except on public holidays. Allow three to four hours, and combine it with Tiananmen Square at the southern gate.
